Rising Stars Amateur Generous Garden Project

Posted on May 30th, 2013 under News

Rising Stars Amateur completed their second community service project for the year on Saturday, May 11.

Their team worked at the Generous Garden Project, which grows fresh vegetables and produce. The Generous Garden Project partners with local charities to deliver food to people in need. According to their website, they started in April 2011 and have produced over 102,979 pounds of produce (over 100,000 meals) with the help of 3,000+ volunteers.

Our girls worked for two hours weeding, digging rows, planting watermelons, transplanting seedlings and watering the plants.

They were given a tour of the unique way they grow produce in water and had the chance to dig in the dirt for worms!

This was very different from how our girls usually spend their weekends! Most of the girls had never worked in a garden before, so it was a learning experience as well. At the end of the day, they were dirty and tired but very, very happy to have contributed to the cause.

The website is http://www.generousgarden.org

UCDC Dancers Volunteer at the Special Olympics

Posted on May 3rd, 2013 under News

UCDC dancers had the wonderful opportunity to volunteer again this year at the Anderson Spring Special Olympics on 10 April 2013. We had dancers volunteers from the Clogging, Jazz Companies, Hip-Hop Teams and many of their parents for this all day event. The event began with the running of the Olympic torch and the parade of athletes. The athletes were age 8 – 60+ and they had a full day of softball distance throws, running, basketball, bean bag toss, etc. Some of the dancers were buddies with the special needs athletes, while others manned the tent to hand out water, free toys, snacks and cheer on the athletes during the event. It was a rewarding day for our UCDC family to assist others in our community. Thanks again because you truly demonstrated our “212” Project Shine motto!
